Questions for Social Security Attorneys

Q: What should you ask social security attorneys when you interview them about representing your disability claim?
A: There are several things that are important to ask social security attorneys you are interviewing. First, find out if social security disability is the main focus of the attorneys and their firms. An attorney who regularly deals with social security and disability will have the knowledge and experience needed to navigate your claim successfully through the process. A general attorney will not. The second thing to ask is if the attorney or a representative will accompany you to a hearing. Many firms have social security representatives, rather than social security attorneys, represent claimants during a hearing. The third question for social security attorneys you are considering hiring is what challenges they see in your case and how they would overcome them. This will give you a little insight about how the attorneys approach disability cases and their experience level. It is generally not helpful to ask social security attorneys how many cases they have won versus lost. The circumstances of one claim are so different from another that it is difficult to determine the reasons a claim was or was not awarded benefits.
Q: Does your attorney need to be located in the same town as you?
A: Your attorney does not need to be located in your city. In fact many social security attorneys drive many miles and sometimes across state lines to meet with and represent their clients. It is more important that you have an experienced and skilled attorney with whom you are comfortable, rather than one based in your city. If you are considering hiring an attorney who is located a significant distance from you, be sure to ask if distance will be an issue for meetings and representation. The attorney will let you know if an attorney who is closer to you might be a better fit.
